It might not have been meant that way, but it looks like a gentle diss of the Snowshoe’s Western Territory as not enough. The Charleston Gazette has the story.

Winter Olympics, auction in fortnight

snowshoe-olympicsThe Winter Olympics are just 15 days away. And although alpine site Whistler/Blackcomb (and Snowshoe) would have suffered the ignominy of learning that they could be sold off in a foreclosure auction amid the games due to the failure of parent company Fortress Investment Group to make a $524 million loan payment last month, the just-announced sale of Panorama Mountain Village will raise some needed cash.

Some say quarry proposal threatens Snowshoe

800px-sandersquarryindianaA proposal to expand a quarry at the foot of Snowshoe has enraged some tourism businesses and created a 2-1 split on the County Commission, according to a story in the Pocahontas Times, which first broke the news January 13. The fear is that the million annual tons of limestone to get hauled out of the Linwood Quarry owned by Waco Oil & Gas Co. would create dust, traffic, and threaten the Upper Elk River which, the Snowshoe Property Owners Council calls “one of the last places in the East where you can fish for naturally reproducing Brook, Brown and Rainbow trout.”

However, the Commissioner who declined to join the other two with a letter opposing the federal stimulus money noted that the attributes of the proposal, which— tantalyzingly includes restoration of two rail lines have not yet been fully aired. Besides improving the 52-mile-long South Branch Valley Railroad, the project would reopen the 13-mile stretch of the West Virginia Central Railroad that links Slatyfork with Spruce, the latter the now-vanished lumber town tucked into the forest northeast of the Silver Creek ski area. Allegheny Mountain Radio, WVMR, also has a story. (Note: upper photo does not depict the Linwood Quarry.)

A Cass Shay as seen on August 23.

The town of Cass, which lies at the foot of Snowshoe’s end of Cheat Mountain, got a nice little write-up in the September 9 Washington Post as writer Christine Dell’Amore checked out Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and other local color, including Cass’ still-snipping 89-year-old barber, Lyle “Lefty” Meeks. (Alas, Snowshoe Resort didn’t get mentioned in the story, except that the Village’s Cheat Mountain Pizza was named as an available eatery.)
