Some condo owners received word today that Sunday, March 22 will be the last day for skiing and snowboarding at Snowshoe. If so, that moves the date up a week from the original planned closing date of March 29 and suggests a wet end to a snowy season that began with three feet of snow to create an earlier-than-planned opening on November 21.
With Silver Creek having closed yesterday, March 15, on a rainy weekend, Snowshoe wraps up what, until mid-March, had been one of the snowiest recent seasons. A press release puts the season’s length at 122 days; and, unless Mother Nature suddenly cools down, this year’s total snowfall was 190 inches, with the resort offering five feet of base throughout much of the season, reaching the magic milestone of getting 100% open for the first time in two years— and getting the Silver Creek half-pipe open for the first time in four seasons.
“By January, Snowshoe had already surpassed its snow total from last season, and the resort saw its snowiest October to January period since the 1995-1996 season.” Hooray for that. Let’s get even snowier next year!
